Here are my recommendations for both economy and more deluxe home gym equipment.
- A barbell of course. This is the most valuable piece of your gym. Buy a raw steel power bar. Power bars have a center knurl. It’s a must for serious squatting. There are lots of good bars out there now.
- The Texas Power Bar
- fantastic, made in Texas
- 190,000 psi
- Aggressive knurl
- 28.5mm
- The Ohio Power Bar (Buy the raw steel version)
- 205,000 psi
- 29mm
- Knurling isn’t as aggressive as the Texas bar
- The Texas Power Bar
- A rack
- The Rogue r-3 Power Rack
- This rack will take care of you for the rest of your life
- Buy an extra set of j-hooks
- The Rogue r-3 Power Rack
- A bench
- The REP Fitness FB-5000 Comp Flat Bench
- This bench is inexpensive but it is the best one out there

- Plates. Men need to start with 4 pairs of 45’s, 1 Pair of 25’s, 2 pairs of 10’s, 1 pair of 5’s, 1 pair of 2.5’s, a set of microplates. If you have a training partner, you’ll need to double all of the quantities for the small plates and will need to add more 45’s. You do the math.
- Budget choice, Cast Iron plates from Troy
- Better choice, Training bumper plates from Rogue fitness (=/- 15 grams!)
- Microplates
- Clamps/collars

Luxury goodies would include:
- Platform
- Deadlift jack
- Dip station for your r-3 rack
- A second bar
- Spotter arms for your rack
